  In addition to capitalizing on the water view of the San Juan channel from the Great Room, the owners wanted that central living space imbued with light from all sides, prompting the incorporation of a continuous clerestory around the perimeter of the elevated great room. At night - when the light source changes from outside to within - the soft glow emitted from the Great Room evokes the look of a gleaming lantern.

  A few beautiful madrone trees regrettably needed to be sacrificed for the structure's placement but an early commitment was made to reclaim these and integrate them into the structure - first as a structural element supporting the front deck and then by, retaining the theme, weaving a madrona trunk into the built-in bench off the entry vestibule.
